Gli Stati Uniti sono fin dalla loro fondazione una nazione profondamente multietnica dove la cultura popolare e la produzione di opere d’arte e di intrattenimento ha creato e alimentato stereotipi riguardo ai gruppi minoritari che abitano nel paese. Quasi tutti conosciamo lo stereotipo dello schiavo afroamericano, del mafioso italiano, del lavandaio cinese, del capo indiano, ma ci siamo mai chiesti noi, da italiani che abitano in Italia, se esistano stereotipi riguardo alla maggioranza “WASP” (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant, bianchi protestanti anglosassoni)?

La nascita e la crescita di internet hanno cambiato radicalmente il mondo in cui il resto del mondo (specialmente quello occidentale) vede gli Stati Uniti; se per i nostri nonni e i nostri genitori gli USA erano una sorta di terra del futuro e della libertà, il “mondo sognante e misterioso di Paperino”, per citare Francesco Guccini, i social ci promuovono un’altra realtà americana, più sporca, brutta e cattiva, quella che è raccolta e raccontata accuratamente nel film Gummo di Harmony Korine e che fin dalla fine del novecento programmi satirici come I Simpson, I Griffin, South Park e Rick and Morty hanno deriso e ridicolizzato. L’americano più celebre non è più John Wayne, cowboy/soldato/eroe dei tre mondi, ma è l’operaio sovrappeso Homer Simpson, alcolizzato, stupido e semianalfabeta, o il ragazzino ispanico Morty Smith, disabile mentalmente, frustrato sessualmente e bullizzato a scuola e a casa; non è più tempo del bravo ragazzo rosso Richie Cunningham.

In questo modo, è ovvio che se Hollywood e i social media continuano a promuovere stereotipi, sulle minoranze, talvolta rinnovati (gli afroamericani delle barzellette e dei meme non sono più schiavi, reverendi o contadini, ma padri single, spacciatori e giocatori di basket; gli indiani non levano più gli scalpi, ma indossano giubbotti di jeans e sono proprietari di casino) gli stereotipi sulla popolazione bianca si alimentano e diventato aperti al grande pubblico mondiale.

Per questo ho deciso di raccogliere quelli che forse sono i cinque macrostereotipi della popolazione bianca americana di origine nord-ovest-europea, affiliata a un personaggio di fantasia che incarna lo stereotipo al meglio. Cominciamo!

Il Redneck

Vive nel profondo sud americano, è povero e razzista, ha i capelli tagliati in un mullet, probabilmente fa parte del Ku Klux Klan, è omofobo e fondamentalista cristiano; ha relazioni sessuali incestuose (sua moglie è probabilmente sua sorella, che picchia così come picchia i suoi figli), commette piccoli crimini, distilla liquore, guida un pick-up e fa uso di metanfetamina.

L’esempio di fantasia più scontato è sicuramente Cletus Spuckler della serie animata I Simpson, anche se si qualifica come un esempio più positivo della maggior parte degli altri. Dopotutto Cletus non è razzista, è piuttosto simpatico, non è violento né con la moglie né con i figli e il reato più grave che ha commesso è la distillazione di liquore illegale. Comunque si qualifica!

So, for those of you keeping track… Which is probably none of you. But I find this stuff as amusing as it is infuriating.

In 2024, these are some of the growing conspiracy beliefs with regards to things the various conspiracy theories claim do not exist.

1) Viable Vaccines 2) Viruses 3) The Sun and the Moon as we know them to exist 4) Atoms 5) Gravity

And while you may wish that these people were all window lickers and crayon munchers who look and act like Cletus Spuckler of the Simpsons, they don't. A reminder of what I do for a living. In the last 23 years, I've met, worked, and trained with police officers from various agencies who were diehard 9/11 conspiracy theorists, diehard Birthers, and who believed the Walmarts were going to become FEMA Camps when Obama declared martial law to suspend the 2016 elections garbage. In the last five years, I have worked with officers in my own agency who believed the 2020 election lies, who believed in the adrenochrome conspiracy, who believed in flat Earth, and who believed the moon landing was a hoax. By virtue of those last two, they didn't believe in gravity or the sun & the moon being what we know them to be. And I can tell you for a fact that you will find these same believers in our military, in our elected political class, in our schools, and in every other walk of life.

While you probably read some of my posts complaining about the spread of various conspiracy beliefs with a grin or an eye roll, let me assure you that there's a very good reason that all of us should be vigilant against the spread of conspiracy nonsense. Conspiracy theories depend on one another for support and growth. You don't just become, say, a flat earther and reside in that part of the conspiracy ecosystem. To support that belief, you have to embrace more conspiracy theories and, eventually, they get dark. Right now in what most people see as the silly or stupid conspiracy communities like flat earthers and moon landing deniers as well as those seen the less silly such as anti-vaccine and woo medicine communities, we're seeing a rise in the promotion of the idea that history was rewritten by the winners (AKA, the Jews) and Hitler was a noble leader and the Nazis were fighting the good fight but were shut down by those powers who controlled the other governments so that Hitler and the Nazis couldn't free the rest of us from our shackles.

Conspiracy communities, more so the rightwing conspiracy communities but also in what has been seen as traditionally more leftwing conspiracy communities, are becoming breeding grounds for the new Neo-Nazi beliefs. They're also becoming a breeding ground for the embrace of authoritarianism and fascism, sometimes with extremist religious leanings, even as they claim they're the ones breaking themselves free of that.

On a larger scale? We're literally watching almost 50% of our country's politics become dependent on conspiracy beliefs- and not just with regard to the election fraud myths. That is a path that cannot be sustained for the continued functioning of our country.
